Happy Realisation

It's a sad joke that we cracked when we were kids, but when anyone wished us 'Happy New Year' after the 10th of January, the normal response to that was Happy Realisation.

Quite sad.

My Zebra feet
Anyway, here's a list of some of the other realisations of the last decade.

  • I am really good at Camouflage.
  • If I think I have jaundice, it's most probably because I just ate cheese flavoured banana chips that have automatically given me a yellow manicure.
  • Planning for a wedding is tougher than learning Chinese.
  • I will never speak good Hindi.
  • I will never stop laughing at other people's bad Hindi. (Aku talking to a Mehendi lady on the phone for her bridal mehendi: Mujhe full legs nahi chahiye, sirf feet karna hai).
  • I will never be able to call a Macaroon a Macaroon without first calling it Macroom biscuit in my head, thanks to my grandmother.
  • Richie Rich is boring and He-Man is the coolest.
  • You can survive without Facebook just as you did before it existed.
  • Green tea does not make you lose weight.
  • The Home Alone tune is called the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Tchaikovsky. I know every piece of classical music because of movies, ads or Tom & Jerry.
  • Tibbs Frankie at Shivaji Park kicks all other Tibb's Frankie's bums.
  • Yellow Ochre is not really yellow.
  • Movies will always end the same way. How much ever I want Marley to stay alive, he still is going to die at the end of Marley and Me everytime I watch it. Just like how Julia Roberts will never marry her best friend.
  • I am seriously lazy if I type K for Ok.
  • Contact is the coolest movie of the 90's.
  • Great marketing and great bullshitting skills can surely take you a long way. I have a lot to learn. I am saying this because I went for the Anish Kapoor show and it sucked bigtime.
  • And Michael Buble's real name is unfortunately not Michael Bubble. How disappointing!
Have a good weekend!

Happy 2011

google image
Being a designer, when people talk about resolutions, the first thing that comes to my mind is 72, 150 or 300 dpi?

Every new year I think about what my resolution for the year will be.
And then I don't make one since its more than likely that I'll forget about it in a day or two.
In my teens I thought of getting a meaningful tattoo but then had nothing to say that would mean something to me years later. Luckily. Then I went into the whole let's try every Adventure Sport phase and tried none.

This year however I'm making up for all those years and making a whole list of them.

Today, the 1st of January for many seems like a new beginning and the New Year celebrations continue.
For me, it's all about Saturday Night Fever. No, not the movie. I just have fever on a Saturday Night.

Did I party too hard last night? Umm.. No.

I had decided not to attend any party where I feel coughed up from the room.
Or drink till I get pickled since unfortunately for me noone would be watching me lovingly with My Cherie Amour playing in the background.
Or be in a 5 foot radius of anyone about to throw up.

I attended a nice new year party which was pretty sober/ normal (besides the part where I was fencing with a bunch of balloons on a stick) and now after having recovered from it, I have decided to jot down some plans for 2011.

  • Draw more cause I know I can do better.
  • Learn to cook and try not being afraid of fire or knives for a change.
  • Or draw and cook.
  • Find love like this.
  • Start cycling.
  • Get a Sheila ki Jawaani body before Aku's wedding (since I feel like I'm starting to look like the food I've been over-eating. My mother has started calling me plumcake).
  • Write more letters. Collect more stamps for my stampbook.
  • Watch more movies. Especially the good ones in foreign languages. Maybe I'll try and understand them without subtitles.
  • Travel.
  • Write a book. On what I do not know.
  • Finally setup my own website.
That seems to be a very long list.
So exciting/scary.

And if nothing works out I'll just have a 'tub-bath'.
(My mother's solution to all my problems).

But, to be honest nothing in life scares me all that much.
I guess that's cause I know how to enjoy life's simple pleasures.
For example, the other day I had a Frooti. It got over too soon. This made me very sad.
A minute later I had a Frootilicious burp and then life seemed lovely all over again.

Here's wishing you many Frooti filled burps this year.
Have a good 2011!

December ♥

Christmas is coming
And I am getting fat
Need to get my ass off the sofa
And onto the yoga mat

It's the end of the year already and I don't quite know where 2010 went really.
This past month has been a busy one. My sister, Aku is getting married and has decided to make me CEO of her wedding. Also a convenient way of making me do her work while she air-kisses my ass.
The way things are going, I just may be Bridezilla at her wedding.

I've been planning to go for the Anish Kapoor show at Mehboob Studios for a while now but have been shuttling between all kinds of stores, printers, venues and everywhere else that I'm expected to be instead. And have not even had time to document my life here. But as much as I complain about it, I do enjoy it quite a bit. Most of the time that's cause people think I'm the bride and for some reason find the need to be unusually kind and happy around me which is pretty awesome. Suddenly every outfit looks amazing and every colour suits me. I must say, they definitely put the best sales people in wedding stores. The compliments nearly feel as good as a creamy bar of milk chocolate.

Christmas decorations at Damian in Bandra
My life has sort of turned into a big fat things to do list and how I love it.
But for me December is always special. And this is why.
  • You wake up everyday to great weather. A lot of people use the word nippy which for some reason I don't like so let's just stick to great weather.
  • Marzipan sweets for breakfast lunch and dinner. And christmas cake with custard for dessert. The recipe for the perfect love handles. If only I was Colombian and couldn't Waka Waka myself into shape.
  • I get to experiment with my winter look. Even if I wear the weirdest of outfits, I can't look all that funny since my hair looks awesome in this weather. I am generally seen wearing my eat-as-much-as-you-want pants which a friend told me were pregnancy pants. Oh well! Same difference.
    Look Ma, no tree
  • I go to the movie theatre and get comfy in a jacket and knee high football socks. I dress like I'm wearing a duvet without actually wearing one. Anna Wintour could learn a thing or two from me this season.
  • Everything is lit up so beautifully. There's a house close to mine which hangs lights like they're hung around a tree but when you look closely they're just lights. No tree. It's just something else. And I wait to see it every year. So, if you're on Turner Road, look out for it -->
  • You don't need a reason to celebrate. Every day in December feels like your birthday for some reason.
  • My mother still pretends to be Santa and keeps a little surprise under my pillow when I'm asleep on Christmas morning.
  • And if you still manage to get bored you can always watch feel-good Christmas movies like The Holiday which is undoubtedly my favourite. Since I had watched it so many times, for a change I watched Love Actually. But, there's one naked scene that I had forgotten about, and as my luck would have it, the lady who works in my house saw me watching just that. So, now Innocent (which funnily enough happens to be her name) thinks I watch porn. So, now I'm back to watching The Holiday.
I'll leave you to one of my favourite Christmas songs which they seem to play on TV every year around Christmas time. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas.

And if I don't see you again this year, then Happy New Year.
Hope you get hit on more than a piñata.
Enjoy your bubbly. Tchin-tchin!

A Life less Internetty

by Lee Crutchley
I've been internet-starved for about a week now.
Life seems dull without the RGB.
I am one of those boring people who enjoys ignoring the world and spends her evenings glued to her computer like a moth to the light.
Not being a social butterfly, I am more likely to be seen surfing with my hands firmly on my keyboard than my feet firmly on a surfboard.

But, since I've been disconnected from the World wide Web of fun, I spent my week desperately searching for other things to do. Here's how it went.

Saturday
Black and blue was the theme. No, I'm not talking about a Sanjay Leela Bhansali Film but my bruises. It wasn't a simple 'Princess and the pea' story either. It was more of a slipping and falling and drama drama drama till I was served food covered in white sauce which miraculously acted as a pain killer. There's something special in the white sauce that my mom makes which comforts your bones like bubble wrap.

Sunday
This was Children's Day. So, I celebrated it by being myself. Took a couple of catnaps. What else do u do on  Sunday anyway?
I was all set to write one of those nosalgic blogs but, oh no! No internet.

Monday
Painted my nails bright blue. Then transparent. Then black.
Ate a salad with olives. Realised how much I love olives. They have such a perfectly cheesy quality. Weirdly enough I always took them off my food just cause I thought I didn't like them.

Tuesday
Saw a lot of goats. A lot of them. It was the day before Eid. Couldn't help but feel scared for them.
Such mixed feelngs. I do eat animals. But I feel bad too.
Hypocrite?
An issue better avoided.

Wednesday
Watched Marley and Me. Makes me cry everytime. Every single time. And I've never had a pet.

Thursday
Practised doing Smokey eye makeup on myself in preparation for a friend's wedding coming up very soon.
Makeup is something noone really ever taught me. So, I've learnt most of it on YouTube.

Friday
I watched Golmaal 3 only to avoid climbing 6 floors since my elevator wasn't working. Never understood the point of it or how spending even a Rupee on making it was justified but I guess India loves slapstick so it works.
To make my day more fruitful, I cut my fringe a bit. And in a bit of a hurry.
Working on Photoshop all the time makes me feel like I can Ctrl+Z my way out of everything in life.
Well, not quite. Definitely not haircuts.
I guess in a few days I'll have a Ctrl+N look to look forward to.

Saturday
I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1. I always love it. Witches and wizards, a well imagined story, a book I never bothered to read, British accents I love to imitate and so much more.
And I can't stop staring at the nose of He-who-must-not-be-named. It's so weird but cool but weird.
Ended my week of internetless misery with an El Bandida Cosmopolitan at Sancho's, the new Mexican restaurant in Bandra.
I guess that's what Sarah Jessica Parker would've had in Mexico.

A lot happened.
A lot of introspection.
A lot of Jasmine Tea.
A lot of realisation.
I realised how much I hate eating with a fork and knife.
So a big thanks to all those people who I've dined with and have done all the cutting while I've done all the eating.
Yes, seriously.

So, I guess that makes me a Survivor?

What a Week!

The October Blog

This post is titled The October Blog since incase you didn't already notice, I didn't have even one entry all of last month which sort of bothers me and has made me write this now.

So why was there no blog?
Was I busy? Not really.
Was I out of town? Partly.
Was I in depression over a boy? No, it's been a while since that happened.
Did I run out of material??

Definitely NOT.

I've come to realise that even when my life is super boring and there's nothing to say really, I still always have something to say. And it's the same with my writing.

I could write a whole article on someone as random as Kevin Bacon.
Now you may think why Kevin Bacon?
He's not a super actor nor is he handsome, according to me atleast.
Then Why Kevin Bacon?
Well, how often do you meet someone who's surname is Bacon? Seriously?
It's like me introducing myself as 'Hi, I'm Neha Pork Chop'.

Clearly, I could go on and on so instead I'll just get back to the point.

October.
The month when you pretend to enjoy the heat during the rainless days and spend your evenings surrounded by moths of all sizes who seem to be crazily flying around in party mode. Sometimes they are butterflies but I dislike them just as much. My mom says that a butterfly entering the home is a sign of goodluck. Well, I think it's like crow shit. They tell you  it's goodluck just so you don't feel so bad about it.

My October began with Navratri-Dassera like everyone else in India. I know that it was the time when Ram defeated Ravan but then why do we do Durga Puja? I guess I have a lot of reading to do.
With so many Gods, I tend to get confused at times. And I went to a Christian school where everyday I prayed to Jesus (as most people know him), or Jejhus (according to Rakhi Sawant) or Jebus (according to Homer Simpson) so I don't exactly have a concept of one God.
But, tell me something. What's with the fascination with Dandiya that comes with Navratri? According to me it's the silliest thing invented by Indians. Never quite understood the point of going around in circles hitting sticks (and occasionally people's eyes) and pretending to enjoy it. But, it's meant to be a time for celebration, togetherness and for some reason it's a time when advertisers go crazy with the contraceptive advertisements.

With my house under renovation, and being trapped in one room where my grandmom owns the remote control, I decided to find other things to do besides the obvious - watching TV. I tried reading but I have only still read Eat. I don't know if I'm ready for Pray or Love yet. Like a good whiskey, I too take time to mature.
So, I'll just watch the movie.

Speaking of movies, I watched the Rajnikant-Aishwarya starrer Robot - the movie that started the phenomenon of 'Rajni is cooler than Superman' jokes. It was one of the weirdest movies ever. Firstly the robot is a lookalike of Rajni but like a younger cooler but still not handsome one but without the weird-Scientist-who-doesn't-have-the-time-to-comb-his-hair look. And this Robot is named Chitti. I don't know why. And then he insists on pronouncing Robot as Robo. Is that the Hindi pronunciation of the word? Anyway, I ended up watching only the first half being dragged out by my friends in the interval. Not that I was dying to watch it but there was definitely a lot of curiosity.
Now some people called this a superhit. I fail to understand how. The only way to describe it is by comparing it to a Rorschach inkblot. Everyone seems to see something different in it.

The dog and the Cone
The best part of my October was meeting new family and old friends.
I visited my only married school friend and her husband and had a ball of a time. I always thought it was weird to hang out with couples, especially when you're single but it so was not. Plus they have the cutest dog in the world. He's the most hyper and friendly dog who keeps your feet warm while comfortably sleeping over them.
He nearly seems like the perfect man. Kind, friendly, loyal. But then again he would make a pretty crappy date. He does tend to stare a lot while you eat.
So, I spent a week with the fab couple and tons of Chinese, Japanese and Thai food.
Overate and totally loved the food but hate how I'm such a virgin Chopstick user. I'm the girl who picks up the fork at a Chinese restaurant while having to deal with stares of disappointment.
Oh well! You can't always please the world.
So I ended my month with a week spent with great friends, great food, cocktails and burning off the fat by shopping in the mall. Brilliant!

So that was my October.

Before
Diwali sort of came and went. Just like Obama.
Like every year, I decorated my house with lights, a lantern and a Rangoli.
Ate Diwali sweets for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Wore new clothes.
Had an oil bath. No, not a bath with oil but a bath after putting oil. It's a weird old custom or something my grandmom made up. She even pours a few drops of oil in my ears which I swear I can feel going into my eyes. Whether that's actually possible I don't know. But everything is connected so who knows. To prove my point I did once pour a few drops of oil in an ex boyfriend's ear and all I got was a dirty look.

Re-read the significance of the 5 days of Diwali just for fun.
After
Again, is it more about Ram coming back from the jungle or about Lakshmi entering the house? I started reading about Ram and he seems to have done a lot. I guess that's why we have the Ramayan. I read about how he married Sita in a Swayamvar. Much before Rakhi Sawant and Rahul Mahajan and Prithviraj Chauhan. I remember learning about Prithviraj Chauhan's Swayamvar in our 4th standard history textbooks and thinking it was so romantic and that he even looked cute in the textbook drawing. I was a silly 9 year old then. And Prithviraj married his cousin. Weird.

Getting back to the point, I spent Diwali replying to many text messages since that's how it's done these days. Noone sends greeting cards anymore unfortunately.
Met up with friends. Had long nonsensical conversations on what Aku had taught me as the 3 things you don't discuss at the dinner table - politics, religion and sex.

And I cooked. Which is a Diwali miracle. I made quesadillas which I learnt from my friend while on holiday. Thanks Enez. I would put up the photo but then it took my mom a while to take my picture with the right pose so the quesadilla looks a little 'tanned'.
My job was more of the assembling and putting on the pan kind, while my mom did vegetable cutting since we needed to eat that day itself. She cut all the veggies in about ten minutes which was pretty good. I wanted to tell her to give me julienned vegetables just so I could say julienned but since that's not what we needed and since it would have only earned me another dirty look I thought I'll save the word for another day.

Happy Diwali.

Cappadocia - a Hedonistic journey

Today's Google Doodle
Today happens to be the 50th Anniversary of the Flinstones and to celebrate it I'm going to tell you about a place that's something just like Bedrock.

Where will you be flying to today? asked the man at the airport check-in counter.
My grandmother promptly replied - Turkistan.
I never quite understood her obsession with that word.
That day we were actually taking a flight to Kayseri from where we were to drive down to paradise.

Cappa-doh-shia

Kappa-doh-kya

It's one of those po-tay-to  -  po-taa-to sort of words.

We had one of the 'usual' travel stories. I stared out of the window for most of the flight watching the clouds cast their shadows on the calm blue sea while being surrounded by the 'regular' people on the flight.

  • The loud family member - my grandmother - who laughed right through the flight while reading Absolute Khushwant, a book everyone came to read on the trip.
  • The random person reading something weird - this time it was a lady reading The Bastard from Istanbul by Elif Shafak. I wonder what that was about.
  • And lastly there's either one of the two - the crying baby OR the annoying American.

As much as I get irritated with the crying baby, you can never blame them for crying. I have also cried with ear pain on flights.
But as my luck would have it, I had an annoying American who wouldn't shut up about how the online car industry was going to be the next big thing to hit the world. I can't even say I loved her confidence.

Driving down to Cappadocia made me feel like I had just fallen asleep and was a part of my very own dream. Rüyasi in Turkish (I can't help but show off about the few Turkish words I've learnt).

Truly breathtaking. It's one of those must-see places. It's basically made up of volcanic rock that was formed from the ashes of 3 volcanoes that erupted millions of years ago. This soft rock made it easy to carve out of and people built homes, churches and amazing hotels too.
It was more than obvious then that I would be soon buying myself an authentic pumice stone. Bye bye Dr. Scholl.

Wine at Turasan
It was one of those places you go to to relax. Not much to do besides basking in the sunlight, eating, reading magazines, drinking freshly squeezed orange juice, going for walks, eating more, playing cards, drinking wine and eating some more.

And obviously drinking apple tea.
My most amazing observation: When the granules of apple tea mix with the hot water, it looks just like the bioluminescent plankton in the movie The Beach.

The highlight of being in Cappadocia was going for the hot air balloon ride.

We woke up at 4:30 am. It was so cold. Not a time for the bum shorts to make an appearance.

We got to an open ground where they were setting up 2 balloons.

Watched the sunrise as we went up in the balloon.

At one time I counted about 50 balloons. Try it.

Cappadocia from up above looks like a beautiful meringue made by Jamie Oliver. It nearly made my mouth water.

Weren't quite ready to land even after an hour.

Celebrated our flight with Champagne.

No checking-in, no immigration, no turbulence and a pilot with a great sense of humour - Undoubtedly the best flight ever!
And we even got a certificate.

Our wonderful hotel
Cappadocia was awesome. What made it even better was our hotel, Elkep Evi.
We had large cave rooms with big comfy beds, lots of magazines to read, a sit-in closet and a music system with a lot of cds.
I was expecting to find a CD of Tarkan's Kiss Kiss but found and listened to everything from La Traviata to Christmas Carols and Kenny G.
Now La traviata isn't my kind of music but it was weirdly relaxing. Which made me wonder, did I enjoy it cause I'm from a different time?
As a child, I believed that I was from the future cause when I heard the Macarena for the first time, it felt like a deja vu. Does that make any sense?

Aku, Halil & me with
 a random Japanese lady
We also did a day tour of Cappadocia with our guide, Halil.
He made Turkey seem even more beautiful than it was.
He told us about their culture. Turkish people seem quite similar to Indians in a way. Quite family oriented. It isn't a very strict Islamic country as people seem to be eating and drinking freely even during Ramadan. They also call Eid Bayram.

Another random fact about Turkish people : They're not much into junk food. They prefer to munch on sunflower and pumpkin seeds instead of chips.

Being scared away by Muhammed in Istanbul, we thought of going for a Hamam in Cappadocia but luckily Halil warned us in time and saved us from being bathed by men yet again.

Trying hard to make the
Will you Marry me sugar pot at Avanos
He took us to see
  • the beautiful churches in Goreme. All carved out.
  • To Avanos, famous for its pottery. It is said that back in the day if a boy wanted to marry a girl, her father would ask him to make a sugar pot. Now, a sugar pot has 2 parts, the jar and the lid. If the lid fit the jar meant that the boy was a good potter, fit enough to marry the girl.
  • To a wine store - Cappa wines where we tasted wines - don't know what else we could've really done there. I also learnt the Turkish word for Wine from the paper bag. It's şarap.
  • A jewellery store where I learnt that Turquoise is called Turquoise because it's Turkish quartz. I think. And the men at the store were for some reason trying to find me a Turkish husband.

Why I loved Cappadocia
Waking up in Cappadocia everyday brought a smile to my face.

I felt like I was in a room carved out with love.

My sit-in closet
A room with a view

I was surrounded by the kindest of animals.

Ate lovely cheese pancake - like stuff for breakfast.

My hair looked straight everyday.

At breakfast here was jam, jam and more jam.

And they have the cutest ice-cream man who entertains you.

Hated to have to leave Cappadocia for obvious reasons.
While we were in Avanos, we visited a pottery store where we were shown a special bottle that the Turkish people would make to store their tears. This was used by women when their men were at war so when their husbands returned they could show them how much they were missed.
I thought this was just so beautiful.
To be dramatic I would've loved showing how much I miss Cappadocia in the very same way but then again I think my blogpost makes it pretty clear.

Carry on Turkey!

A funny photographic journey through the 3 places I spent a lot of time in while in Turkey.
Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Airport.

ISTANBUL
Why you must stay at Harmony Hostel.
Why should you eat here? Why Not?
Even better than Zoltar.
This is why people don't pee on the streets like Bombay.
Martina Navratilova lookalike on the Bosphorus cruise.
Is it a bird? Or a plane? Or a home? Hotel? Or Restaurant?
They say Bankasi for Bank. Isn't that cute?
I don't quite know how to explain this.

CAPPADOCIA
They are called fairy chimneys because they resemble umm... fairy chimneys.
Carpet potato cats watching football.
Counting them helped us take good afternoon naps.
Playing Rummy with Turkish playing cards. The belly dancers are the jokers.

ATATURK AIRPORT

The Indian Volleyball team. Yes, we have one.
Why should one go 3 hours early to the airport? For a haircut.

The truffles named after me that live at Duty Free.

Not my water bottle.

Naturally! Atleast Ataturk Airport agrees with me.
