The birds and the bees

When people travel, their eyes open up to a whole new world.
A friend of mine went diving recently and she told me about how her experience changed the way she saw everything.

We're so caught up in our everyday lives that we forget to see what's around us.
And when we go deep sea diving and find ourselves in a space that one can only describe as infinite and blue, it makes us feel small. And our problems seem silly.

But, since we're all not fortunate enough to experience this, we tend to get lost in our own lives and think that the world revolves around us.

So take a moment.
And think.
I did.

I couldn't sleep one night last week.
And it was at that strange time when you couldn't be sure if it's night or morning.
And all of a sudden it was like all the birds of the world had woken up.
And let me add that this wasn't the chirpy little tune you hear in Cinderella-like movies where the birds sound like they are singing nursery rhymes and lullabies while helping Cindy get dressed.

In my case it was crows.
Only crows. Cawing.
And thankfully not attempting to help me get dressed.

Which made me wonder.
Did they all just wake up from their slumber?
Do birds actually sleep?
How do they sleep?
Standing?
Isn't that weird?

It was such a simple question and even though I thought it would be obvious that they would sleep, I didn't know anything about how that happened.

And so I googled it.

Here's what happens:
Some birds have special flexor tendons that help them hold onto branches that help them sleep standing up.
Some float on water.
Some of them sleep with their head in their feathers.
And some birds like owls are just party animals. They stay up all night.
That's it.

After this I went on to how do fish sleep and other interesting facts that most people don't care enough to know.

But you should care.
About the birds.
And the bees.
And the birds and the bees.

Here's what wikipedia says about the coining of the phrase:

According to tradition, the birds and the bees is a metaphorical story sometimes told to children in an attempt to explain the mechanics and good consequences of sexual intercourse through reference to easily observed natural events. For instance, bees carry and deposit pollen into flowers, a visible and easy-to-explain example of male fertilization. Another example, birds lay eggs, a similarly visible and easy-to-explain example of female ovulation.

But I meant it literally.
Which led me to a whole range of videos by Isabella Rossellini.

It's called Green Porno.
Starring Isabella Rossellini.
Where she explains how animals have sex and reproduce.
Pretty interesting and funny.
And quite educational too.

And if someone walks into the room while you're watching this, they'll just think you're strange and that's not too bad.
It's better than watching a movie like Her and having to explain to your mother that Joaquin Phoenix is having sex with his OS.

The Best friend

I am in love with this animation by Madeline Sharafin.

It's about a dog.

It's about food.

It's about the dog cooking the food.

Cutting the veggies.

Making an omelette.

Flipping it in the air.

Decorating it Masterchef style.

And leaving it on the table and making you think you made it.

To the tune of a sweet French Brazilian song.

Love it!

If only dogs could cook.
Clean.
Do the dishes.
Teach us yoga.
Rent out DVDs.
And tuck us into bed.

Jellyfish

I used to love looking at Jellyfish.
In books.
Where they're all pretty and they talk.

And then I didn't love looking at Jellyfish.
I was on holiday.
Swimming in the sea.
And then I got stung by what I thought was a plastic bag.
You can't blame me.
I live in Bombay where that would be more likely.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.
But I managed to survive without having anyone pee on me
And I'm so glad I did because this remedy is a lie.
And instead I opted for plain old cold water and bought myself what I think was the Israeli version of soframycin [we'll never actually know if it was because I couldn't read the Hebrew writing on the packaging].

But, from then on Jellyfish was the enemy.

And then I saw this.

Jellyfish lights by Roxy Russell
And I fell in love with Jellyfish once again.
I'm always fascinated with cool lights.
And this one is just beautiful isn't it?
And there is a bright side to it even when it's switched off.

It doesn't sting.

Three Black Spots

Today is a super exciting day for me.
I woke up and I wanted to give myself a big hug.
Three Black Spots is now available in the Kindle store.
And I am the lucky one who got to design the book cover.
Yay!
And I also did all the illustrations in the book.
Double Yay!

Cover design + illustration by me.
This has been my favourite job till date and I just had to share it on my blog.
This book is for everyone - those who like to read and those who prefer to wait for the movie.
I clearly fall into the second category but reading this book was actually fun.
Even without the popcorn.
It's light and is very easy to get through with it's many short chapters that tell you fun stories about a dog named Yoda.
Yes, Yoda the wise Jedi Master from Star Wars.

Clearly there's a thing or two to be learnt from him.

He has travelled all over the world, enjoyed many wine tastings and has dealt with regular human problems like bad haircuts.
Something we all can relate to.

He enjoyed all the good things in life and makes you want to do the same with yours.

Three Black Spots - Our Adventures with Yoda by Mina & Mohan Krishnan is now available on Amazon.

You can buy the Kindle ebook here.
You know you want to.

You can read it on your Kindle.
And if you don't own a Kindle, don't worry, just get the Kindle App available on iPad, iPod touch and iPhone. And it's available on Android too! You can read it on pretty much any device. See below

Let me know what you think.
Enjoy!

May the Force be with you.

True Love

What is true love?
Well, for me it's the beautiful glittery stuff you see in the movies.
That kind of unconditional love is so hard to give at times.
Except when you find that special someone for whom it pours out of you like a perennial waterfall.

I usually find it easy to love animals in this way.
And I can never understand people who don't.

Since I was a little girl, I've always wanted a dog.
Though I think at that young age I probably just wanted a horse that would suit my height.
Or even an Oompa Loompa would've kept me happy.
But I never had a pet of my own.
And that made me a little sad.

Design by Gemma Correll
The years went by like passing trains.
And in that time I bonded with many little dogs - some that belonged to friends and some that lived in my neighbourhood.
We played, talked about life and I cried when they left me.

And then last month I went to a dog adoption drive.
I played with all the puppies and almost took one home.
He was tiny and black and white and his name was Oreo for obvious reasons.
I could imagine him looking pretty at breakfast next to a cup of milk.
Don't worry, I wasn't going to eat him.
His cuteness just made my heart melt.
But I realized I didn't have it in me to give that glittery part of my heart away just as yet.
It was a combination of the fear of commitment, responsibility and attachment.
Oh well!
But for those brave enough, here's one of life's simple truths:

A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull.
Give him your heart and he will give you his.
- Marley & Me (2008).

Hope you have a beautiful and glittery day!

Confused-etarian

For the past couple of months my sister and I have been calling ourselves vegetarians for some reason when we are clearly NOT.

I feel like a big fat hypocrite when on the one hand I think about how killing animals is so cruel and on the other hand enjoy many meals where these very same animals are well, the main ingredient.

Since the only non-vegetarian food I eat is chicken and seafood, in my defense I say well chickens are sort of bred for slaughter (I know. I am Cruella De Vil's evil twin) and anything that swims ought to swim faster if it doesn't want to be eaten by me.

Whereas my sister truly believes that she has become a complete vegetarian even when her mouth is watering while watching the Masterchef contestants barbecuing meat.

These days she reminds me of Alex, the lion from Madagascar who's hunting and meat craving nature begins to show when sent out into the wild. I am a bit worried.

I on the other hand stopped eating goats and animals larger than goats when I was a child. *
My explanation: It makes me feel like I'm eating a pet.
My explanation according to my family: Goats walk on the road. So I don't eat them.
Well, I was a weird little child so it's not completely unbelievable that I said that.
And who knows, maybe I told myself chickens walked on clouds.

* Except when it's circular and rhymes with Palami.**
**Palami is a made up word.

The Forbidden Fruit

Every morning when I open the newspaper (the entertainment section ofcourse), I read many articles about how great Indian cinema is. And about how much coverage our Indian actors are getting at the Cannes Film Festival. And how A-list Hollywood actors want to be a part of Bollywood movies now.
When I read such articles, I can't help but think, do we live in our very own Indian bubble?

To be honest, I don't think we make great films. There are a few that are good or some that can be watched once maybe. Most are made for the masses and these crowd pullers are usually slapstick or made with the sense of humour of a 5 year old.

Then the other day while having one of the most random conversations with a friend, I reached the conclusion that as strange as our films may be, no other film industry has the imagination and creativity that we have.

This was how my conversation went:
Friend: I love eating this asian mango and sticky rice dessert.
Me: Rice is main course. Not dessert.
Friend: No you must try it. It's really good.
Me: Ok, mail me some.
Friend: I'm just sending it.
Me: Fedex?
Friend: No. With a dove. Fedex is so old fashioned.
Me: A bird?
[I am not a fan of birds in general and the one time I tried to feed grains to pigeons, they scratched me and made me cry and that was the end of that friendship.]

So while my friend (who is American) was trying to show me the ways of the 21st Century, I showed him this.

Yes, our Bollywood filmmakers always thought ahead and out of the box.
We used birds as delivery boys back in the 80's.
I was 4 years old when Maine Pyar Kiya was released. At that age all I did was just stare at the screen, so for me it was as good as watching He-Man.

And then when I watched the video a few days ago to prove a point to my friend, I was thoroughly amused by the ridiculousness of the imagination of Sooraj Barjatya.

These were my observations:
> The bird (white pigeon) is used as a messenger to deliver Bhagyashree's first love letter to Salman Khan.
> The bird then flies out of the window and directly into the backseat of the car. This is because:
- The bird is not a plane with an in-built GPS system and doesn't know directions in the sky.
- The bird is crazy lazy.
> The bird reaches the party sitting in the car while Bhagyashree puts on some jewelry, prays to God and sets the table for dinner.
> The bird continues to be lazy and finds his way around the party while being carried around by a waiter along with a tray full of cold drinks.
> Kabutar finally delivers the letter to Salman Khan.
> Salman gets excited on reading it and spends the day laying on the grass while kabutar has a little drink.
> He then suddenly drives back to his palatial home like Schumacher where Bhagyashree has been waiting for him in the balcony surrounded by tacky flashing Neon lights that say ice-cream (which are used to add drama to the scene?).
> Kabutar finally uses it's wings and decides to fly back home and inform Bhagyashree that Salman is on his way.
> Salman reaches home and greets his lady love with open arms.
> She goes running to him and greets him with a 'passionate hug' in true 80's style.
> The next day they are in a garden and Kabutar keeps making an appearance from time to time. Suddenly they are surrounded by apples.

Yes, apples.
Was it set decoration of the 80s?
Was Bhagyashree hungry?
Was it Salman's way of saying How do you like them apples?
Or was it just the forbidden fruit?

I think it was Sooraj Barjatya's way of showing 'an expression of love' back in the day when Emraan Hashmi was still a child.

This made me realise that as bad as his movies were, Sooraj Barjatya did start a trend.
A trend carried on by the makers of Desperate Housewives in their opening credits.

Adam & Eve by Lucas Cranach.
When in doubt, look to the Bible for creative inspiration.

The quick brown fox...

In college, I was a Typography student.
I carried my Typolog and Letraset with me everyday. And they were heavy books which had nothing in them besides the pangramThe quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog written in hundreds of fonts.

Looking through these books everyday turned my mind into a kind of font book.
And when I'd be out and about and look at road signs and movie posters and shop name boards, I'd browse through my own little library and look through the hundreds of fonts embossed in my mind.
And most of the time I'd be able to tell which one it was.
Now it's not a talent that I was excited about and I felt more like a machine scanning a fingerprint to find a criminal.

While daydreaming, I visualised this line and decided to draw it out.
And then I thought why not make it a little more interesting and build a story around it.

Q: Why did the quick brown fox jump over the lazy dog?
A: Maybe he was the star acrobat in a circus jumping through a hoop of fire which was positioned right above the lazy dog who just happened to be drinking a glass of beer.
Or maybe not.

Erase and Rewind.

But with the ballet shoes on. It's important for a fox to look foxy at all times.
Or maybe they were just auditioning for Rose's part in Titanic.
Drama drama drama!
Or maybe not.
I just wanted to have some fun.

Hugged by a black cat

My day started in a not so good way.
With AC repair guy (who didn't fix anything).
Followed by Apple service guy (who changed my whole hard disk).
A quick mango break to ease the pain of technology breakdown (4 mangoes makes that happen).
Followed by internet guy (changed my modem because the lightning blew it up).
Followed by Apple guy (who came to tell me he has to change my motherboard next week).

Now Apple service is awesome. Never has anyone followed up like that.
Apple guy - not so awesome. He dirtied my screen from the inside (genius!) and now I have to wait for him to re-visit just to open my screen for quick cleaning.

If all this wasn't bad enough, while eating lunch, a tiny piece of papad got jammed into the roof of my mouth. I'm not being a drama queen but papad felt more like a knife. I couldn't really help myself for a very long time after trying to stick the torch in my mouth and be my own dentist. I was contemplating pulling out my 4 front teeth (more realistically, taking a strong painkiller). But, it was hard to help myself with tears rolling down my face while my grandmother thought it was the funniest thing she has seen all day.
Then, one of my doctor friends came to my rescue. Relief!

I am so angry with papad. Never eating it again.

It feels like today is just not my day.
I don't know if I believe in black cats crossing my path as unlucky.
But, honestly it feels like the black cat decided to give me a big hug this morning.

my own exaggerated superstition
I did manage to have an invigorating Yoga class which seemed to be the turning point of my day.
Maybe the countless up-dogs and down-dogs scared the cat away.

Hoping Hakkasan is the happy ending to my non-fairtytale like day.

Happy Sunday

It’s a very happy Sunday for me. More on that later.

Last night I went to The Comedy Store with some friends. I was all ready to wear this dress with cats all over it. Aku told me I was just asking for trouble. So just went in my ‘forever-backup’ outfit of tights and a top.

It was a fun night. And a fun show. After 2 appletinis I don’t think I could’ve cared about cat-related jokes.

Do I buy such clothes because I’m an animal lover? I'm not a leopard print wearing girl for sure. But I just love this dress.

I am not the extreme fight for animal rights kind of person but I do love animals. I got loads of proof on my phone. This is just some of it.

Have a look

Meet Keisha – the laziest but kindest dog.
So peaceful, you may think she’s been meditating all her life. Well, she is actually on a permanent vacation.
Or she’s just busy enjoying the good life in Shimla.

This is Mitoo. I’ve never actually met her but she sounds like a person. A bit intimidating.

And Arthur. Who comes by my window while I eat breakfast. And flies away after his daily dose of gossip.

And George – the friendly neighbourhood snail. I saw him a week ago at Turner Road. I’m guessing he’s still there.

<-- A reason to go find him again.

Meet Tina, Mina and Rina. Enjoying their weekly kitty party.

And Caesar and Cleopatra looking beautiful as always. They make it look so effortless.

And when they don't behave themselves, I serve them to my friends.

Just kidding. Not to worry. Just a distant cousin.

And Nemo, and Dora and nemo’s stunt doubles (Nemo I, Nemo II & Nemo III)

Again, a great meal!
For umm...Gerard.

Burrrppp.

And this is Tiger, my sweet dog in Gorai. Confused about his identity that he spends his days doing Yoga for peace and relaxation.

Convinced?

Would I be going overboard with the animal love if I got these?
